KUALA LUMPUR: Former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin has passed away at the age of 86 while receiving treatment in hospital. Daim’s lawyer, Datuk Gurdial Singh Nijar, confirmed his passing.
A prominent businessman-turned-politician, Daim served as Malaysia’s finance minister twice, from 1984 to 1991 and again from 1998 to 2001. Hailing from Alor Star, Kedah, he was also a long-standing Member of Parliament, holding his seat for five terms between 1982 and 2004.
Daim first entered Parliament as the Kuala Muda MP in 1982, just a year after his ally, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, assumed the role of prime minister. He later contested and held the Merbok seat, representing UMNO and Barisan Nasional, for four consecutive terms. This is a developing story.
