Strengthening National Defense: Parliament Urges Increased Funding for MINDEF

In Mindef, procurement must be user driven and not contractor driven as this is vital to ensure our military has quality assets that are suitable to their needs.

Members of Parliament have called for the government to enhance the national defence system in response to escalating global geopolitical tensions. During the debate on the Supply Bill 2025 in the Dewan Rakyat today, Onn Abu Bakar (PH-Batu Pahat) emphasized the need for increased funding for the Defence Ministry (MINDEF) to bolster national security and address regional threats, particularly through the acquisition of new military assets.

He referenced the recent sinking of the Royal Malaysian Navy ship, KD Pendekar, off Tanjung Penyusop, Johor as a reminder of the importance of maintaining modern vessels, given the ship’s outdated condition. Similarly, Datuk Seri Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz (PN-Tanah Merah) urged the government to ensure that the Malaysian Army is equipped with assets tailored to the specific requirements of its personnel.

This discussion highlights the urgent need for a review of Malaysia’s defence capabilities and the importance of investing in modern equipment to meet the challenges posed by an increasingly complex security landscape.

“In Mindef, procurement must be user driven and not contractor driven as this is vital to ensure our military has quality assets that are suitable to their needs,” he said.

Datuk Dr. Zulkafperi Hanapi (PN-Tanjong Karang) emphasized the importance of not underestimating national security and urged for an immediate overhaul of the country’s defense system. He advocated for the enhancement of the Defence White Paper through strategic measures, particularly in the area of air defense.

He also highlighted the necessity for Malaysia to bolster its satellite capabilities to effectively manage airspace and implement comprehensive air defense systems.

“We also need to add the number and capabilities of our combat aircraft or jet fighters, upgrade our anti-ballistic missile systems to ward off any possible attacks,” he said.
