PETALING JAYA: The source, who requested anonymity, revealed that PAS Youth had proposed Takiyuddin Hassan, PAS’ secretary-general, for the position.
“I’m not sure why the announcement of Azmin as PN’s new secretary-general was made in haste, but PAS appears uncomfortable with it,” the source told FMT. The insider noted that Hamzah Zainudin’s previous appointment as PN secretary-general was made after Supreme Council discussions and agreement from all coalition components.
“Hamzah’s appointment involved negotiations, with PAS agreeing to it. However, Azmin’s appointment seems to lack this process,” the source added.
Background on the Appointment
Muhyiddin recently confirmed to Sinar Harian that Azmin would be formally announced as secretary-general for Bersatu and PN. This follows Hamzah Zainudin’s move to take on the role of Bersatu’s deputy president after his victory in the party polls earlier this month.
PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, who also serves as PN Youth chief, had earlier suggested Takiyuddin as Hamzah’s replacement, citing Takiyuddin’s experience and seniority within the coalition.
Concerns Over PAS-Bersatu Relations
The source expressed concern that Azmin’s appointment could deepen a rift between PAS and Bersatu.
“Previously, Ahmad Faizal Azumu’s announcement of Muhyiddin as PN’s prime ministerial candidate led to public disagreements among PN leaders. Now, the appointment of PN’s secretary-general without consultations has created another issue,” the source explained.
PAS’ Stance on Leadership in PN
PAS spiritual adviser Hashim Jasin recently stated that PAS was better suited to lead PN, citing its larger parliamentary representation and stronger grassroots network. Hashim also pointed out that PAS had no history of elected representatives defecting to other parties.
In the 2022 general election, PAS secured 43 seats in the Dewan Rakyat, compared to Bersatu’s 31. Bersatu’s representation was later reduced to 25 seats after the party terminated six MPs for supporting Anwar Ibrahim’s unity government.
Coalition Unity at Stake
Despite tensions, Gerakan president Dominic Lau defended Muhyiddin’s leadership, reiterating that he remained the coalition’s “poster boy” for the 16th general election. However, PAS’ growing influence and seat share may continue to challenge the balance of power within PN.
