MGTC Leads Malaysia’s Green Transformation with Sustainable Initiatives

MGTC projects that Malaysia will cut its carbon footprint by 45% over the next five years, establishing the country as a leader in Southeast Asia’s green economy.

As Malaysia accelerates its transition to a greener future, the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) continues to lead the nation’s green transformation. Established under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, MGTC has been instrumental in advancing sustainable development over the past 25 years.

Initially founded as Pusat Tenaga Malaysia in 1998 to serve as a national energy research center, MGTC’s role has expanded to drive green economic growth. The agency’s Green Technology Financing Scheme introduced over a decade ago has mobilized RM6.264 billion in investments, supported 458 projects and created over 5,500 green jobs.

Additionally, the Green Investment Tax Allowance and Green Income Tax Exemption have attracted RM9 billion in investments since 2016. MGTC has introduced key initiatives like the Low Carbon Operating System (LCOS) to help industries monitor and reduce carbon emissions. Their community programs, such as Rumah Ibadat Hijau have reduced 286 tonnes of carbon emissions, equivalent to planting 7,150 trees.

The agency also promotes green procurement through initiatives like MyHIJAU certification which aims to certify 50,000 green products by 2030. At the local level, MGTC has collaborated with authorities to create 63 low-carbon zones and 149 low-carbon partners with a target of 200 zones and 1,000 partners by 2030.

MGTC’s focus on consumer spending, government leadership, investment, and trade aims to make green products the preferred choice. The agency also champions the International Green Technology and Eco Products Exhibition and Conference (IGEM) which showcases green solutions and promotes global collaboration.

Ultimately, MGTC strives to embed a green lifestyle into daily life, encouraging energy-efficient choices, sustainable transportation and waste reduction to foster environmental responsibility and ensure a sustainable future for all Malaysians.
