The sudden resignation of Selangor FC head coach Nidzam Jamil has shocked the club and its fans, sparking questions about deeper issues within the organization. This year alone, two head coaches, an assistant coach and a technical director have resigned from Selangor FC, raising concerns about instability. Former Selangor player Azlan Johar suggests the problem is rooted in poor management rather than coaching.
He pointed out that Selangor has cycled through five head coaches in the past seven years including B. Satiananthan, Michael Feichtenbeiner, Karsten Neitzel, Tan Cheng Hoe and most recently, Nidzam, who initially joined as an assistant in 2021. “Nidzam’s departure reflects deeper issues at Selangor, indicating something problematic within the club’s structure,” Azlan commented.
He added that while local coaches could be considered as replacements, the club’s history shows that both local and foreign coaches have struggled to bring consistent success with the last major win being the Malaysia Cup in 2015 under Mehmet Durakovic. Azlan stressed that addressing management shortcomings is essential before pursuing a new coach.
He argued that Selangor’s current leadership has not provided adequate support to the coaching staff, resulting in repeated setbacks. According to Azlan, a key factor is granting autonomy to coaches, enabling them to shape the team’s style and strategy without interference. He emphasized that competent management must allow the coach the freedom to dictate team tactics and should trust the coach’s expertise.
Until Selangor FC builds a strong, supportive management team and commits to empowering its coaching staff, Azlan believes any new coaching appointments will likely face the same challenges.
