Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin Seeks Dialogue with PM Anwar on MoU Concerns

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin expressed his willingness to engage in discussions with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim regarding the issues related to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on allocations for opposition Members of Parliament. During the debate on the 2025 Budget in the Dewan Rakyat, Hamzah stated, “If he tells me, ‘What is wrong? Let’s sit down and discuss if there are indeed unfavourable elements in the MoU that we need to address,’ I would be open to it. If someone is gentle, I can be even more gentle. This discussion is something we should do together.”

Hamzah, who represents Larut under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, emphasized that the MoU should be fair and not a tool to restrict the opposition. He expressed concerns that the MoU pressures opposition members to comply with government demands in exchange for allocations, stating, “There should not be pressure on the opposition to comply with every demand of the government. Isn’t it the role of the opposition to serve as a check and balance on the government?”

Previously, PN had rejected two proposed MoUs from the government regarding MP allocations. Hamzah noted that both proposals, one involving the Government of Malaysia and PN and the other concerning PN MPs were unanimously turned down due to various concerns. In response to Hamzah’s claims, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof provided evidence to counter the opposition leader’s assertions.

This exchange highlights the ongoing tensions between the government and opposition regarding the allocation of resources and the role of the opposition in maintaining checks and balances in the political system.
