MELAKA: A fire destroyed an electronic waste and EV battery collection plant in Bukit Rambai Industrial Area yesterday.
The Melaka Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) reported that the fire broke out around 12.50pm, but no casualties were recorded. Thirty firefighters from five stations—Tangga Batu, Cheng, Melaka Tengah, Ayer Keroh, and Alor Gajah—were deployed to contain the blaze.
JBPM received a distress call at 12.51pm and dispatched a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) vehicle, a water tanker, and seven personnel from Tangga Batu. Additional support came from four other stations, including three FRTs, a water tanker, an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit, an Aerial Ladder Platform (ALP) vehicle, and a Hazardous and Toxic Materials (Hazmat) team.
When the first fire engine arrived at 12.56pm, 90% of the plant was already engulfed in flames. Firefighting efforts continued until 5pm.
Senior state executive councillor Datuk Rais Yasin stated on Facebook that he had directed relevant authorities, including the Department of Environment, to inspect the plant’s operations and licensing. The inspection aims to ensure the plant complies with safety regulations and operates legally.
