KUALA LUMPUR: The Southeast Asian Parliamentary Caucus for Palestinian Liberation has called for accountability for the Israeli regime’s actions despite the recent Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement.

Chairman Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh welcomed the ceasefire but highlighted significant challenges, urging global action to ensure its full implementation.

“The agreement begins with an initial six-week ceasefire phase starting Sunday, involving a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, the release of hostages by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, and large-scale humanitarian aid. The details of the second and third phases will follow after this phase,” he stated.

Syed Ibrahim urged the United Nations (UN) to take assertive steps to ensure the agreement is upheld, particularly by opening humanitarian aid channels as per the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and UN Security Council mandates. He also called on Malaysia to actively support these efforts and collaborate with the UN.

Additionally, he proposed establishing a Special Action Committee to aid in the reconstruction of Palestine and Gaza, involving non-governmental organizations and experts in construction, education, health, and economic development.

Syed Ibrahim also called on Malaysia to expedite efforts to remove Israel from the UN, emphasizing that the ceasefire was long overdue. He described decades of Palestinian oppression as one of the worst humanitarian crises, citing violations by the Israeli regime of international resolutions and agreements.

Negotiators reached the ceasefire agreement after 15 months of conflict that claimed tens of thousands of Palestinian lives and intensified tensions in the region. The deal, brokered by Egyptian and Qatari mediators with U.S. support, involves a phased truce and prisoner exchanges. Hamas has confirmed its approval of the agreement.
