More flood victims in Kedah and Johor this morning

The Irrigation and Drainage Department’s Public Infobanjir portal reported that nine rivers in Kedah have exceeded danger levels.

KUALA LUMPUR: The number of flood victims in Kedah and Johor has risen as of 8 a.m. today, while conditions in three other states are showing signs of improvement.

In Kedah, the number of evacuees increased to 439, up from 305 last night, with all victims relocated to four temporary relief centres (PPS) in two districts. State Civil Defence Force deputy director, Major (PA) Muhammad Suhaimi Mohd Zain, stated that most of the victims are from Kubang Pasu (252 people), while 187 others are in Pendang. The Irrigation and Drainage Department’s Public Infobanjir portal reported that nine rivers in Kedah have surpassed danger levels, including Sungai Ketil in Kampung Baru (Baling), Sungai Gurun in Kampung Perupok (Yan), and several others in Pendang, Kubang Pasu, and Kota Setar. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) forecasts widespread thunderstorms throughout the day in Kedah.

In Johor, State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) chairman Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani said the number of flood victims has increased to 601, up from 582 last night, with the victims staying at three PPS in Kluang, Pontian, and Batu Pahat. Although the weather is expected to remain clear across all 10 districts, the water level at Sungai Sembrong in Batu 2 Sembrong (Batu Pahat) is at a warning level.

In Perak, the JPBN Secretariat reported a slight decrease in flood victims this morning, with 297 people compared to 298 last night. The victims are housed at four PPS—two in Kerian and one each in Taiping and Hilir Perak. Thunderstorms are predicted in all districts later this afternoon, according to MetMalaysia.

In Selangor, the Social Welfare Department’s Info Bencana portal reported a reduction in the number of evacuees in Gombak and Kuala Selangor, dropping to 137 from 186 last night. The victims are currently taking shelter at three PPS.

In Melaka, the number of evacuees also saw a slight decrease to 22 people from 23 yesterday, all of whom are housed at the PPS at Sekolah Kebangsaan Tehel, Jasin.
